No team ever as capable of producing offense like the 1987-1988 Edmonton Oilers (Hackel ,nhl.com) . For the first time since the early 1980’s the Oilers did not finsh first in their division nor did they lead the nhl in scoring. Partially because superstar Wayne gretzky was injured for 16 games. However this did not stop him from getting 149 points that season. The Oilers were maturing as a team, they started playing much better defense being the second best defensive team in their division (Hackel, nhl.com). This new defensive mentality allowed the Oilers to walk through the post season finishing with a record of 16-2 sweeping both division champion Calgary Flames and the Boston Bruins ,a top 3 defensive team in the NHL , to once against hoist the Stanley Cup in back to back seasons. (Hackel, nhl.com) Much of the credit is due to the goal keeper who had a vezina winning season. Leading the NHL in most categories and tying for most shutouts goalie Grant Fuhr also recorded 8 assists. The new defensive minded Oilers limited the Bruins to 26 shots on net in the first two games of the cup final with 14 shots in game one and 12 in game two. They went on to sweep the Bruins winning 6-3 in game 4.
