Having 8 of the top 25 players in the league might have been a key reason why this was one of the most talented roster Wayne Gretzky ever played on according to him ( Hackel, nhl.com) . After a being eliminated from the 1986 playoffs by their bitter rivals the Calgary Flames, the 1986-1987 Oilers had one sole focus in mind coming to training camp the following fall, to win the Stanley Cup. This Oilers roster was one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the league averaging 4.65 goals per game, about one goal per game higher than the league average which was 3.67 ( Hackel, nhl.com). The team essentially ran through the first two round of the playoffs winning the first series 4 games to 1 against the Los Angeles Kings, then going on the sweep the Winnipeg Jets in 4 games. When it came time for the conference finals they faced the Detroit Redwings. Gretzky recalled that series saying “"The Messier line really carried us offensively in that series[...]That line went to another level." ( Hackel, nhl.com) they faced a tough defensive opponent but managed to come out on top in 5 games. It took 7 games to beat the Philadelphia Flyers and win the Stanley cup finishing the season exactly where they wanted to be.
